The Sweet Potatoe is a hip and modern kids brand that launched in June of 2014 in Seattle, WA. We started out by selling our first designs at our local Saturday Farmer's Market in Redmond, WA and shortly launched our small collection online and at a few local kids shops. Since then, we have been a part of many handmade craft fairs on the West Coast and New York City, including Renegade Craft , Urban Craft Uprising and Artists and Fleas.
Inspired by our love for travel from a young age, each piece is designed with traveling in mind. We love to choose bold colors for our fabrics and unique patterns. Our main inspiration is travel and cities that are filled with culture and history. We want to design and create clothing that is comfortable enough for play and for the budding little traveler inside them. The Sweet Potatoe is stylish, yet comfortable, with its emphasis on fabric prints, fabric quality and gender neutral designs.
Creating everyday mini wardrobe staples for the curious little explorers.
Hello! I'm Maria Aldana, founder and designer of The Sweet Potatoe. I love earl grey tea, new adventures and of course, kid fashion.
After working in the corporate world, I decided to go back to school for fashion and moved to NYC for a few years on a tight budget. I interned for a few of my favorite designers in their fabric and production departments. My first design teacher was a kids clothing designer and I never imagined that would be an interest of mine down the road, until I had my little man Skye, who is now 2 years old. It has been an exciting and spontaneous adventure!
I moved around quite a bit while growing up and always remember the little adventures traveling around as a kid and meeting new "little" friends, luckily, most of these friends, I've reunited with in recent years. I remember them as "curious explorers" from such an early age and they are also a part of my inspiration.
Maria has her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communication from London and studied fashion at The New School, Parsons School of Design in New York City. Check out her new creative outlet & lifestyle blog/shop:
